• With my group we have done an interview about materials used for the hives. Before that, here is an identity card:

Name: Connected hive                                             Materials: Wooden box and frames

Beginning of the project: March 2017                  Size: 50*50*50

This project aims at raising awareness about beekeeping. The lifespan of a hive is the lifespan of a queen bee: about 5 years. A hive can accommodate approximately 50 000 bees. The hives will be placed on the balcony of the CDI. There will be 2 maybe 3. For a hive, the price is 150 euros plus the swarms which also cost 150 euros. After having bought the hive, it's necessary to buy the equipment like sensors, cables, etc, to monitor these hives at a distance. All these equipments were purchased on an American site : Adafruit. Solar panels will be installed in order to power the hives with energy. Other hives will be installed at the “Jardin des plantes”.

  • We have questioned Mr Philippe Simier, computer science teacher for the BTS SNIR (the students in charge of the connected hive project).

A small group of students in this class must carry out a study project: they have to find solutions to problems like "Measuring the temperature in the hive", "Establishing a connection to obtain statistical data on the connected hive", or "Setting up an SMS alert system"!

    A well-crafted project !

Many of these problems have already been solved: the students use different sensors connected to the hive (temperature, weight, humidity...) but also different communication means that are used to transmit data collected by the hive like SMS, or cellular data (3G/4G).

    A well-crafted project !

Today, all statistical data are available on an administration interface on the website: http://philippes.ddns.net:8080/.

    A well-crafted project !

The SMS alert system is also already configured, it allows to receive different personalized alerts if one of the hive parameters is unusual: too high temperature, excessive weight of the hive...

    A well-crafted project !
